How To Start A Basic Skincare Routine

Let's face it, walking into the skincare aisle can be confusing, more than ever you have the shelves packed with hundreds of bottles and jars full of promise! It can be overwhelming, and if you're not a beauty junkie and haven't been consistent with any skincare products or even cleansing your face daily, it's overwhelming.

You don't need an eight step process to start or end with, but you do need a few products for your skin type and you need to try and be consistent. Consistency is crucial to see and keep results. The routine is basic and generally the same for all skin types, the difference is what you use. So lets take a look.

  1. Figure out your skin type. Before you purchase any products you need to know your skin type so you can invest in the right products. Like I have told my clients through the last 28 years, skin changes. What you used as a teenager will likely not work in your 20's. One great rule of thumb is take a look at your skin every 10 years, ie: 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's and so on. You will begin to see changes towards the end of those years, so you just want to choose products that target those concerns. If you are not sure about your skin type, you can see an Aesthetician for a consult or follow these guidelines to determine it yourself!

  2. NORMAL SKIN: This is balanced skin. Your skin doesn't feel tight, dry or oily. you have minimal breakouts to none at all with a smooth texture and small pores.

  3. COMBINATION SKIN: Your skin will be both oily and dry, most likely an oily T-zone and dry cheeks. You notice the shininess on your T-zone within hours after getting out of the shower.

  4. OILY SKIN: This skin type is usually on the shiny side, you tend to feel greasy on the T-zone and rest of face, you may be prone to breakouts. You may feel its not a smooth skin but rather bumpy.

  5. DRY SKIN: You feel your skin looks dull and generally feels tight after cleansing. Generally you see fine lines and it can feel dehydrated and irritated. Sometimes this can be referred to as sensitive skin.

  • So now you think you know your skin type, let's keep it simple and get you the basics! And remember consistency is key! Rome wasn't built in a day and getting your face on fleek won't happen in a day either, but give it a good 30 days and you will see such a difference! So lets think cleanse, tone, hydration, repeat!

  • CLEANSE: Dry Skin look for cleansing balm, creamy cleansers that won't strip your skin. They add some moisture that you are lacking. Take a look our out SKIN GLOW CLEANSING BALM/MASK. Its a 2fer and is perfect for all skin types too! Leave on for 5-10 minutes before removing and you get a quick hydrating mask.

  • Oily Skin: Gel based and foaming cleansers are great, and if they have some fruit acids in them even better! Fruit acids gently remove dead skin cells that are hanging around, so you will see and improved texture and less oil. Try our CLEANSING GELEE WITH FRUIT ACIDS.

  • Combination Skin: This is more of a preference thing, cleansing balms are great because oils will help break down oils, it doesn't add to the oil. Gel and foaming work too so you need to try one and see if you like it.

  • Normal Skin: I prefer the creamy type cleansers for this skin type, balms or creamy will work! Again it will be a preference of creamy or gel cleansers!

TONE: This is such an overlooked step and be it the easiest! Sometimes we don't remove and rinse off all the cleansers and we need to bring remove what you didn't get and you want to prep the skin for your 3rd step. Look for a toner that doesn't contain harsh alcohols or ingredients. You will find them in a spray or splash. They stay on the skin, so don't remove them. Check out our BOTANICAL HIBISCUS ROSE FACE TONER that we make on the farm with our organically grown spearmint and hibiscus hydrosol. It's refreshing and is a treat for your skin with added benefits from niacinamide, vitamin c, silk and our farm grown cucumber extract.

  • MOISTURIZE: Now you have a balanced face and the perfect canvas! Now is the time to add some hydration while your skin is still damp from your toner. This will help deliver the moisturizer into the top layer of your skin and help protect the skin barrier.

  • Our C YOU GLOW FACE CREAM is perfect for all skin types and we have a lighter cream our G.O A. T MILK FACE CREAM. Applying moisturizer morning and evening will help keep skin balanced.

  • And one thing we didn't talk about yet is your final step for your daytime routine. SPF! Choose an oil free SPF, I prefer COOLA Face Sunscreen in SPF 30. If you wear a foundation or tinted moisturizer with an SPF included in it, you don't need to apply both, just one or the other. And you skip the SPF in the evening.
